The healing secrets of Ayurveda

The healing secrets of India attract people all around the world. It’s hard to know how many people yearly get a medical visa for India, but we are definitely talking about hundreds of thousands. Year after year more and more people are going to India to look for cure of their health problems through ayurveda. This is an ancient Indian medicince, which is over 5000 years old and cures all diseases. And far more than that. It is a medicine for the body and also for the soul. It is a vision for the creation of the Cosmos, the nature, the man and their interrelation. This includes the way of life, thinking, perception, the respect for the world, oneself and the others. With auyrveda the patient has a significant role during the treatment – a positive attitude for cure, denial of harmful habits that led to the disease, strict adherence to the prescriptions, striving for a healthy life.

Ayurveda strongly influenced the healing practice of the whole ancient world. A large part of its methods are adopted in China, Tibet, Persia, Egypt, Ancient Greece, Rome. It can sound shocking but even thousands of years ago the ayurvedes conducted eye surgeries and organ implantation. The ancient Indian medicine principles are aimed at keeping the healthy habits, at therapy of the body and psyche, relationships and spirit. The main approach in ayurveda is the individual healing, including different massages with herb oils, drinking healing potions and following a strict dietary and daily regime.

Translated from Sanscrit ayurveda means “science of life”. It is one of the few systems in medicince, developed in ancient times and still largely practiced in modern times. Today it is officially recognised by the World Health Organization and is a leading alternative medicine in the world. In the country you can find thousands of ayurveda clinics, hospitals, colleges and pharmacies, because of which people from the whole world travel to India.

One of the places where ayurveda is most popular is the Southern state Kerala, which was named by the National Geographic Traveler Magazine in 2012 as one of the most attractive places in the world. That is where is located the only clinic where through ayurveda patients are treated for multiple sclerosis – a disease that the traditional medicine still cannot cure. It uses different therapies with herbal ointments and oils.

Alternative medical practices, as a whole, are widely spread in India and are not limited to ayurveda at all.

Also very popular is the yoga therapy, which emerged in India during the last century as a result of the merging of conventional medicine and the traditional hatha yoga practice. The yoga therapy is a healing system, based on the yoga principles. The treatment is done on the basis of patient’s testing and diagnosis through these principles, and treatment based on yoga values and ancient manuscripts. The therapy works on a physiological, psychological, intelectual and spiritual level.

It is believed that yoga therapy can be used to treat and prevent a number of physical and pshyco-emotional conditions, such as musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory and cardiovascular deseases, digestive system disorders, hormonal disorders, overweigt, insomnia, anxiety and depression.

The world yoga capital is considered to be the Northern Indian city Rishikesh. Nestled in the green hills along the Ganges River banks, the city which was popularized 50 years ago by the Beatles, remains a must-see destination for the yoga pilgrims who take a trip to India. Rishikesh is full of ashrams and yoga schools, visited each year by thousands of tourists.

The city of Hyderabad is the capital of the central Indian state of Telangana. Every year the place is visited by many foreigners and thousands of Indians from across the country, looking for non-traditional healing from asthma. It includes swallowing of live sardines, smeared with yellow herbal paste. The treatment is offered free of charge by a local Indian family, that claims to have received the formula 170 years ago from a Hindu priest. The representatives of the scientific community are very sceptical about this treatement, but every year people from the whole world take a trip to India in an attempt to eradicate their breathing problems. It is interesting to note that the treatment is offered in only one day, which is determined by astrologers.

Generally speaking, the medicaments are not very respected in India. Most of the people in the country prefer to use instead spices, which are powerful weapons against colds and other diseases. The curcuma for example, is an extremely popular natural pain reliever, it has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial properties. The clove oil is used for inhalations to relieve colds. Hot chilli peppers with honey protect the lungs from inflammations and purify the liver, and all body aches are treated with the help of a ginger bath.
